Green Living and Energy Expo 2009 Green Home Tour

Sustainable Big Bend, Inc. is a start-up 501 (c) 3 Not for Profit. It is designed as a community resource for sustainable living. Sustainable Big Bend, Inc. is an ‘umbrella organization’ serving the entire Big Bend that will provide services geared toward networking, education, sharing, outreach and building community with regard to various aspects of sustainable living.

The goal of Sustainable Big Bend, Inc. is to become a catalyst for change and an incubator for alternative, progressive and most importantly practical sustainable living solutions.

On October 8, 2009, Sustainable Big Bend, Inc. held an area-wide event entitled SMART LIVING—SAVE Energy, SAVE Money with E. Leon Jacobs, Jr., a local attorney dealing with alternative energy issues, as the guest speaker. He indicated the important role each of us can play. Through this session, attention was drawn to a dozen local efforts presently in place to encourage more sustainable lifestyles.

The biggest impact in the Big Bend area has come from the Green Living Expos held during 2007, 2008 and 2009. Sustainable Big Bend, Inc., in collaboration with many volunteers, presented these day-long Saturday events at one of the middle schools in Wakulla County. Typically there have been 700-800 people on-site. Evaluations and follow-up from the 2009 Expo indicated that almost 90% of those interviewed six months after the event indicated they had changed some aspect of their lives to become more sustainable.

The Expos are intended to be appropriate for all members of the community and family. This is an opportunity to experience a simpler, more sustainable life and to learn ways to save money and reduce negative impacts on the Earth. In addition to green/sustainable exhibitors there have been many workshops, utilities providing CFLs, Children’s make and take activities, and a local farmers’ tent. Currently the 2010 Green Living Expo is being planned with new ideas for marketing and with a keynote speaker at noon.
